Physical Education
Physical Education Intent – All Saints C.E. Primary School
At All Saints C.E. Primary & Nursery School, our Physical Education curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision of nurturing a safe, loving and inclusive environment where every child is valued and enabled to flourish. Through PE, we support children’s physical, emotional and social development, promoting self-belief, resilience and a compassionate attitude towards others.
We believe that physical education plays a vital role in developing confident, healthy and active learners. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced and progressive, recognising that physical skills develop over time. Learning builds on prior knowledge and experiences, allowing children to practise, revisit and refine skills so they become secure, transferable and embedded in long-term memory. High-quality instruction, purposeful practice and meaningful feedback support all pupils to develop confidence and competence.
Our PE curriculum is inclusive and ambitious, responding to the interests, needs and starting points of our children. We provide a wide range of opportunities for pupils to engage in both competitive and non-competitive physical activities, ensuring all children can participate, succeed and experience enjoyment. Through these experiences, pupils learn to work collaboratively, build friendships and show respect, trust and fairness, celebrating the success of others while developing pride in their own achievements.
We intentionally use physical education to promote key life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, leadership and responsibility. Children are encouraged to approach physical challenges with enthusiasm and resilience, learning how to support one another and reflect on their own performance. These skills reflect our school values and contribute to positive relationships and strong learning behaviours.
We recognise the importance of physical activity in supporting children’s health and wellbeing. Through active play, sport and movement, pupils develop an understanding of how to care for their bodies, make safe and responsible choices, and maintain healthy, active lifestyles that support both physical and mental wellbeing.
Our Physical Education curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils experience a broad, balanced and high-quality PE offer that equips them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for lifelong participation in physical activity.
We aim to:
-
Develop pupils’ physical competence, confidence and resilience, enabling them to apply skills effectively across a range of individual and team activities.
-
Foster positive attitudes towards physical activity, encouraging enjoyment, perseverance, teamwork, leadership and respectful sporting behaviour.
-
Support pupils to understand the importance of regular physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices, promoting long-term physical and mental wellbeing.
-
Prepare pupils for future participation in sport and physical activity, both within school and beyond, ensuring they leave primary education ready to lead active, healthy lives.
Curriculum:
These aims are supported through consistent opportunities for pupils to:
-
Reflect on their learning, recognise progress and set personal goals
-
Work collaboratively, communicate effectively and show respect for others
-
Develop resilience, perseverance and confidence when faced with physical challenges
-
Apply learning across a range of physical contexts and sporting situations
At All Saints we aim to provide a Physical Education curriculum that is creative, inclusive, challenging and inspired by the real-world. Every class receives two PE lessons per week, usually comprising of one indoor and one outdoor lesson.
We follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work which offers all children the opportunities to develop their physical fundamental movement skills, as well as achieving whole child objectives through gaining a knowledge of rules, strategies and tactics and building an understanding of healthy participation.
Each lesson plan has progressive activities that are designed to inspire and engage our pupils; they have clear learning objectives with key success criteria, which provides information to help pupils develop their skill level and to consider how successful they have been within a lesson. Teaching points appear throughout to help teachers with their subject knowledge and modelling and to ensure misconceptions are addressed at the earliest point. Differentiation tasks provide activities with simple changes to appropriately challenge/support to ensure all pupils are successful and feel included.
We recognise that learning takes time; all lessons are sequential and build on prior knowledge and skills. Our pupils benefit from high quality instruction, time to practise and receiving meaningful feedback. They are also given enough time to revisit and develop their knowledge to gain a competence within PE.
Key Concept underpinning Physical Education:
Our PE curriculum is built around the following key concepts:
-
Developing fundamental movement skills
-
Applying skills in a range of physical activities and sports
-
Understanding the importance of health, fitness and wellbeing
-
Competing fairly and working as part of a team
-
Leading active, healthy lifestyles beyond school
EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, physical development is taught as an integral part of their learning by teaching them how to control their movements and become competent movers.
Ongoing experiences and opportunities linking to the children’s physical development world are planned from the objectives set out in the Early Years Framework, which underpin the curriculum planning for children aged 3-5 at All Saints. By the end of the Reception year, they will be able to:
- Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others;
- Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing;
- Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing;
- Hold a pencil effectively in preparation for fluent writing – using the tripod grip in almost all cases;
- Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paint brushes and cutlery;
- Begin to show accuracy and care when drawing.
KS1
Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
The Primary National Curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:
- master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- perform dances using simple movement patterns
KS2
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
The Primary National Curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
