Maths
I have set an activity for Year 3 to do on the Mymaths website which links with our current Maths lessons. Login details are the same as last year. Please let me know if you do not have your login details and so need a reminder letter sent home.

Ten spellings have been set and children will have a sheet of paper with these on in their school bag. The spelling rule this week is 'common word families.' These spellings will be tested on Monday 18th May

Reading
Please aim for three reads this week to earn 1 house point. 5 reads earns three house points. Children's Reading Records will be checked and signed on a Friday. Children can change books before registration each morning.
Times Table Rockstars
Letters have been sent home reminding Year 3 of their TT rockstars logins. If children would like it, there are extra login sheets available which can be stuck in the front cover of their Reading Record. Over the next week, please can children aim for 20 minutes in Garage setting. We are in a competition against other Key Stage 2 classes so please login as much as possible!

Curriculum update - Summer 1
We are looking forward to the penultimate half term of our learning adventure in Year 3! In English, we will investigate the features of explanation texts. After reading lots ourselves, and developing the skills required, we will write our own about the life cycle of flowering plants. We will spend the rest of this half term writing a modern day story with a Mardi Gras setting. Maths this half term focuses on capacity and volume, fractions and money.
In Geography we will investigate land use through our local area study of Alrewas and Staffordshire. In DT lessons we will learn about food and nutrition, developing our food preparation and cooking skills to make simple, nutritious meals. In Science, we will investigate the scientific phenomena of plants. We will plant our own seeds, observing the growth of plants in different conditions over time. In RE we will explore the question, 'For Christians, what was the impact of Pentecost?' Indoor PE this half term centres on yoga and in outdoor PE we will develop our athletics skills. In Computing, we will use devices to create using multimedia. Children will listen to, appraise and perform disco in Music, and in Spanish they will learn how to talk about their school and lessons.
Curriculum update - Spring 2
After another lively half term, we are looking forward to the next stage of our learning adventure in Year 3! In English, we will explore writing informal letters to a pen-pal. Maths this half term focuses on fractions, mass and capacity.
In Geography we will learn about Earthquakes and Volcanoes. We will answer the big question: 'What happened to Pompeii and Herculaneum?' In DT lessons we will learn about structures using different materials, experimenting with these to design, create and evaluate kites. In Science, we will investigate the scientific phenomena of rocks and fossils. In RE we will explore the question, 'Why do Christians call the day Jesus died Good Friday?' Indoor PE this half term centres on dodgeball and in outdoor PE we will develop our football skills. In Computing, we will learn about and use branching databases. Children will listen to, appraise and perform traditional folk songs in Music, and in Spanish they will learn how to talk about themselves and the people around them.
Curriculum update - Spring 1
After a brilliantly busy first full term, we are looking forward to the next term of learning in Year 3! In English, we will first experiment with direct speech by writing an entertaining, winter-themed story. Then, we will write to inform by creating a non-chronological report about Roman Army formations. Maths this half term focuses on multiplication, division, length and perimeter.
In History we will learn about the Romans and their lasting legacy on Britain. This connects to our Art lessons where we will learn about Roman homes and mosaics, creating a piece of Art inspired by these. In Science, we will investigate the scientific phenomena of Forces and Magnetism. In RE we will study what Hindus believe, whilst in PSHE we will examine ourselves and our thought patterns. Indoor PE this half term centres on gymnastics and in outdoor PE we will develop our Netball skills. In Computing, we will learn more programming skills using Code.org. Children will listen to, appraise and perform Reggae in Music, and in Spanish they will learn how to talk about food, eating in and ordering politely.
Curriculum update - Autumn 2
After a packed first half term, we are excited to continue our learning journey with you in Year 3! In English, we will first write our own folklore stories inspired by the witch Baba Yaga. After this, we will work together to write a whole-class information text (non-chronological report) about football, carefully using both idioms and facts to describe. Maths this half term focuses on the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
In History we will learn about the Victorian era and the Industrial Revolution in Britain. This connects to our DT lessons where we will use cross-stitching skills to create a Victorian-inspired bookmark. In Science, we will investigate the scientific phenomenon of light: light sources, shadows, reflections and sun safety. In RE we will study the Festivals of Light across all the major World Religions, whilst in PSHE we will examine diversity in our communities in modern Britain. Indoor PE this half term centres on fitness and outdoor PE will be develop our skills using balls. In Computing, we will dip our technological toes into the world of Wallace and Gromit as we learn about and use Stop Frame Animation. Children will practise and perform using Glockenspiels in Music, and in Spanish they will learn how to talk about colours, actions and clothes.

Our Day
8:45 am: Learning begins! The KS2 gate will be open from 8.35am and children come straight to the classroom from this time ready to start lessons at 8.45am.
10:30-10:45 am: Break time.
12:15 pm: End of morning session.
1:00 pm: Afternoon session begins.
3.00 pm: class story time
3:15 pm: End of school day. The children will be dismissed from the KS2 gate. Unless already agreed, children will only be released to their parents.
P.E
Tuesday: Outdoor PE
Wednesday: Indoor PE
PE Kit:
Trainers.
Navy jogging bottoms or leggings, shorts in the summer.
White t-shirt and a plain navy sweatshirt/ jumper.
Earrings- if your child cannot remove these independently, they should not be worn on PE days.
Long hair should be tied back.
Please label everything with your child's name.
Curriculum - Autumn 1
We are so looking forward to starting this new year with you and enjoying all that Year 3 brings. In English we will begin with writing instructions to make a healthy fruit salad, thinking carefully about how we can make our instructions clear. Maths this half term focuses on Place Value (numbers to 1,000) and addition and subtraction. In Geography we will learning about The Amazon Rainforest in South America. This connects to our Art lessons where we will explore the work of an artist called Henri Rousseau, who will inspire our jungle themed ink printing. In Science, we will be looking closely at animals and humans: their diets, skeletons and muscles. In RE we will learn what Christians believe about Creation, and in PSHE we will consider ourselves, our talents and our emotions.
Homework
In Year 3 there will be Spelling, Maths and Reading homework each week. This will start the week beginning 8th September.
Spelling - Spellings will be given on a Monday with these words being tested the following Monday.
New spelling words will be given as a paper copy to each child (check inside their Reading Record!) and put on the class web page. The test will be in a small book that will come home so you can see how you child has done and what still needs working on. Please return this book with your child on Monday.

Maths homework will be set via the MyMaths website. An additional copy of their login details will be stuck into their reading record book to remind you of this. Please encourage your child to login weekly and have a go. A new task will be set each week.

Reading
Your child needs to bring in their reading book (a library book or a book from home) and reading record everyday so we can listen to your child read. Reading books will be changed once a fortnight on a Friday. Children are expected to read at home to an adult daily and an adult entry made into their reading journal.
All children who record 3 entries into their reading journal each week will automatically receive a house-point token and children who record 5 entries will receive 3 house-point tokens.

Break Time Snacks
Children are welcome to bring in a healthy snack for the morning break time. We are a nut free school so please ensure any snacks do not contain nuts. Snacks are not to be shared with other children as there are several children with specific food allergies.
All children are welcome to buy a snack from the kitchen at break time. These cost 50p and the children can choose one item from: toast, crumpets, pancakes, milkshake or hot chocolate.
All children should bring a water bottle to school. Water bottles are available from the office for a small fee.
