John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust

Year 6 Residential

Dear Parents,

I recently became aware that the year six residential was booked for the last week of this half term, which of course is very little notice to both prepare and to expect parents to pay. We then realised that the open evening for John Taylor fell during the week of the trip, which would have had a real impact on those children moving there next year.

In light of these issues, I have decided to make some alterations to the year six trip. We have secured a 5 day residential in Wilderness Academy (that I promise looks more appealing than its name!) on the edge of the Peak District. I have discussed the venue and activities with the course leader and feel it will be a real experience for our children. This is highly likely to be just after SATs, the week before the May half term (w/c 22nd May 2023.)

I am aware that finances are of utmost concern at the moment for many families – for day to day essentials, let alone things such as school trips. We all know prices and costs are increasing at a worrying rate. I am anticipating the cost of this trip to be in the region of £300 with the coach travel factored in, however, we will be as flexible as needed with regards payment plans. There is now a period of 8 months where this amount can be paid, if you do decide the trip is right for your child. If this is still going to be tricky, please do get in contact.

We would like to invite you to an information meeting on Thursday 22nd September at 3:30pm in the year six classroom.

At this meeting, you will learn about the venue, the travel, the accommodation, the staffing and the activities. If you are unable to attend, we will send you the PowerPoint on request. You will also have the opportunity to confirm your child’s place on the trip, to say “no thanks,” or to go away and have a think. In the days after this session, we will have to confirm numbers to ascertain we have sufficient interest.

It has been a difficult decision. I firmly believe that a residential is of great benefit to children in year six, and the experiences they have are often lifetime memories. But I know that these are unprecedented times of hardship, and finances are strained.

I hope this letter clears any confusion that may have arisen – I am always available to discuss thoughts or concerns.

Kindest regards,

Eleanor Wilson
