British Values

The Department for Education states that there is a need:

“To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.

The Department for Education defines British Values as follows:

  • Respect for democracy and support or participation in the democratic process
  • Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England
  • Support for equality of opportunity for all
  • Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law
  • Respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religious and other beliefs

At our school, Fundamental British Values are taught explicitly and woven throughout school life, ensuring pupils develop a deep, age-appropriate understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Within our Personal Development offer, pupils explore these values through a carefully sequenced PSHE curriculum, where they learn about rights and responsibilities, respectful relationships, and life in modern Britain. Opportunities such as pupil voice, Worship Leaders, Librarians and wider leadership roles further enable children to experience democracy in action.

Collective Worship and Picture News

Collective worship provides a regular opportunity to reflect on these values in a meaningful and engaging way. Each Monday, we use Picture News to introduce a current, real-world issue linked to British Values. This theme is then explored more deeply in Tuesday and Wednesday worship, allowing pupils to reflect and consider different viewpoints in a safe and respectful environment.

Together, these approaches ensure that Fundamental British Values are not only taught but lived and understood by all pupils.
